Blog #1: The Week in Feminism by Chelsea Stevens

I recently discovered in article on Elle.com that is a series of “The Best and Worst of Feminism”. It documents events that occur each week that the author believes relates to feminism. It starts by explaining the positive events and moves to the negative. I had a hard time reading it with the inserted memes joking about both the positive and negative events. It seemed to take the seriousness of the events away and almost seemed to make the article comedic instead of serious. It’s hard to tell if they are doing this to attract more readers or because they don’t think it is a serious issue. With Elle being a top women’s magazine with a large audience, you would think they would want to present serious facts about the issue. While they bring up valid points, the slang dialog makes the author seem uneducated and uncaring about the topic. The bashing of Carly Fiorina also doesn’t sit well with me because I think that as women we should be supporting each other and not tearing each other down, let alone on the internet or millions to see. Interesting site that would be good to follow over the course of the class.

  1. This is a really interesting find, Chelsea! I've never seen it before. I agree with you that the "comedy" aspect is a little weird. It's like they're trying to be edgy but fall flat. Fiorina's jibe at Hillary Clinton is a very interesting one. I'd be interested to hear what you think Fiorina has to gain by attacking Clinton in that way.
