Barbie Gets Curves

I was so excited to see the cover of Time Magazine this week. Low and behold, Barbie is finally getting a makeover. As a young girl, I loved Barbies. I had every Barbie toy and accessory you could imagine. It wasn’t until I was older though that I realized that Barbie looks nothing like real women in society. As women we feel an immense amount of pressure to look like Barbie, she’s tall, she’s thin, she’s blonde, and everything that society thinks is beautiful. As a young girl, you repeatedly play with these toys and try to mimic them. As times have changed though, you realize that there are so many body types and ways a women can look. I think that it is great that they are realizing three new Barbie body types. I think that young girls will be able to relate the women in their lives to Barbie now and realize that you don’t have to be stick thin and beautiful to be Barbie. Hopefully, this will improve the way that not only young girls but also adults view body type and also what we display as beautiful. I think that is a huge step in the right direction and I am interested to see how society accepts the new look of Barbie.
